What is Statistics? 

Statistics is the science of collecting, analyzing, presenting, and interpreting different forms of data. In a typical statistics class, whether in high school or college, you will focus on these various aspects of statistics. The first thing you should learn is the different types of variables you will see.

The Two Main Types of Variables are:

1) Quantitative: This type of variable is based on numbers, and have operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division performed on them.

Examples include: Weight, Age, and Height

2) Qualitative (Also known as Categorical): This type of variable is based on things that would have different categories

Examples include: Gender, Race, and Ethnicity

For instance: categories for Race may include: Caucasian, African American, Native American, etc. 

 

What is a model?

A model is a description or representation of the behavior of a phenomenon based on data

 

What is Data?

Recorded values that we use in Statistics

 

Throughout all of Statistics we will use a lot of data and many models
